Ukraine is increasingly deploying ground robots on the battlefield, marking a significant shift in modern warfare tactics. These unmanned vehicles, manufactured by companies across the country, perform a variety of critical functions including ammunition delivery, rescue operations, and direct combat missions. One such robot, called Murakha, operates via remote control from bunkers located kilometers away from the front lines, allowing operators to conduct dangerous tasks without risking human lives.
The technological advantages of ground robots over traditional methods are substantial. Their electric engines make them harder to detect using thermal imaging compared to vehicles with combustion engines, and they carry heavier payloads than aerial drones while maintaining longer battery life. In April, ground robots achieved a historic first by capturing a Russian military position in the Kharkiv region, with one robot destroying a bunker entrance while another secured the location and captured two Russian soldiers.
These machines address Ukraine’s significant manpower challenges by reducing casualties among troops. Equipped with cameras, GPS systems, and communication technology, the robots can transport supplies, conduct evacuations of wounded soldiers, and even serve in explosive demolition roles. Manufacturers like Robotic Complexes and over 200 startups nationwide continue developing these systems, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy describing the technology as representing the nation’s future defense capabilities.
