Acclaimed Hong Kong performers Law Kar-ying and Paw Hee-ching have joined forces for “The Grand Tribute,” a new Cantonese opera drama helmed by director Sri Kishore. The filmmaker, known for his 2021 work “My Indian Boyfriend,” which premiered as Hong Kong’s first major romantic film centered on a South Asian male protagonist, is now shifting creative direction toward traditional performing arts within the region.
The narrative centers on an aging Cantonese opera artist who orchestrates one final performance as a loving tribute to his spouse facing terminal illness. Law Kar-ying, himself an accomplished practitioner of the classical art form, anchors the production alongside Paw Hee-ching in roles designed to authentically represent the performers’ deep connection to their cultural heritage. Kishore expressed his creative vision, emphasizing his interest in portraying affection between long-married couples and weaving humor throughout the narrative against the operatic backdrop.
Rather than presenting Cantonese opera as a disappearing cultural relic, Kishore envisions the art as a bridge connecting diverse audiences across generations. The filmmaker stated that the medium serves as a universal vehicle for exploring human emotion and intergenerational relationships. The production boasts an ethnically diverse supporting ensemble reflecting Hong Kong’s international character, while planning simultaneous theatrical and streaming releases to introduce global viewers to the city’s artistic traditions.
Principal filming begins this October under the Sri Kishore Film Productions Limited banner, with multiple producers and executive producers attached to the project.
