Lancaster High School’s football team concluded its preseason preparation with an impressive comeback performance during a scrimmage against St. Charles on Thursday, August 13. The Golden Gales demonstrated resilience by mounting a late-game drive that resulted in a 14-14 tie, positioning them well ahead of their season opener against Hilliard Darby scheduled for August 21.
The scrimmage featured two quarters of competitive action, with St. Charles scoring first before Lancaster answered with a touchdown. After the Cardinals extended their lead to 14-7, the Golden Gales displayed composure by forcing a defensive stop and executing a two-minute drill to perfection. Senior quarterback Brody Broeckel orchestrated the final drive, completing passes to Kellen Knock and Jack Pompey before running back Jahmeir Gordon scored the tying touchdown with just 21 seconds remaining on the clock.
Coach Jeremy McKinney emphasized the significance of the team’s response to adversity, noting that strong programs weather challenging situations without panicking. Broeckel echoed his coach’s confidence, stating that executing the two-minute drill successfully at a high level reinforced the team’s ability to perform when it matters most. The varsity squad named five team captains voted on by their teammates: Broeckel, Gordon, Jackson Reynolds, Nik Brown, and Kellen Knock.
With preseason work completed, McKinney expressed optimism about translating months of preparation into regular season success, highlighting the team’s commitment and readiness to take the next step under their elected leaders.
