Kyoto Fusioneering, a Japanese startup that has secured $121 million in committed capital, is expanding its role in the emerging fusion energy sector. The company recently obtained funding from both the U.S. Department of Energy and the state of Tennessee to construct an experimental fuel breeding system at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. In response to this achievement, the startup has announced plans to relocate its American headquarters to the Oak Ridge facility.
The new prototype device, designated Unity-3, will examine breeding blanket technology—a critical component that simultaneously extracts energy from fusion reactions while producing fresh fuel. The system will test multiple materials, including liquid lithium, which captures heat and neutrons to generate tritium, an essential hydrogen isotope used in many reactor designs. This testing ground will provide valuable real-world data to validate models previously developed through computer simulations.
Industry surveys indicate that more than half of fusion startups plan to collaborate with external suppliers like Kyoto Fusioneering on fuel cycle technologies, positioning the company as a central player in the fusion power supply chain. Multiple reactor developers, including Realta Fusion, Thea Energy, Type One Energy, and Xcimer Energy, intend to utilize data from the Unity-3 experiments to inform their own reactor designs. Beyond fuel breeding systems, Kyoto Fusioneering is also developing technologies for plasma heating, fuel recycling, and heat harvesting for electricity generation.
