Director Kim Jong-kwan’s latest film “The Table: Day and Night” has been chosen to premiere at the upcoming Busan International Film Festival. The 31st edition of the festival, set to run from October 6-15, 2026, will feature the movie as its opening selection, marking the film’s debut on the world stage.
The narrative unfolds within a single cafe setting across the summer and autumn seasons, following four distinct couples at different points in their romantic journeys. The film features an ensemble cast including Kim Minha, Joo Jong-hyuk, Han Sun-hwa, and others, with storylines ranging from reconnecting childhood friends to creative partnerships between artists. The cafe serves as the backdrop where characters’ individual personalities and emotional nuances emerge through subtle interactions and dialogue.
Kim Jong-kwan has established himself through a portfolio of acclaimed works spanning short films and features. His previous film “The Table,” which debuted at Busan in 2016, employed a similar structural approach of multiple narratives within one location. Festival organizers praised “The Table: Day and Night” for its refined filmmaking, noting how it skillfully captures authentic character development without relying on conventional dramatic devices.
Alongside the Busan premiere, Kim is preparing the local release of another film titled “Frosted Window.” The festival will coincide with the Asian Contents and Film Market, running from October 10-13.
