The sequel to Kazakhstan’s blockbuster horror film has secured international distribution through a Bangkok-based company. Fearfolks will handle worldwide sales for “Dastur: Teris Bata,” excluding territories within the CIS region, and will present the film at the Toronto Film Festival market.
The original “Dastur,” released in 2023, achieved unprecedented success in Kazakh cinema by becoming the country’s highest-grossing film with approximately $4 million in box office revenue. Its follow-up generated roughly $2 million domestically and expanded the franchise’s popularity across neighboring countries including Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.
“Dastur: Teris Bata” follows a mother named Gulzhan whose daughter vanishes mysteriously. Her search leads her to a remote village inhabited solely by elderly residents who reveal they have taken the child for an ancient ritual connected to teris bata, a concept in Kazakh culture representing severe ancestral condemnation. Gulzhan must navigate the village’s customs and confront her heritage to rescue her daughter. Director Alisha Utev helmed the project, which continues the franchise’s signature blend of slow-burn folk horror and authentic Kazakh mythology.
Fearfolks CEO Hans Audric Estialbo expressed enthusiasm for amplifying the film’s narrative globally, citing the company’s mission to champion impactful storytelling. The distributor has previously handled major horror franchises and international releases across Asian markets.
