A horror film has become the first major acquisition of the Toronto International Film Festival, with Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Atomic Monster securing distribution rights. Director Joshua Giuliano’s slasher “River” commands a deal valued at over $10 million, marking a significant marketplace win for the debut feature.
The film centers on three estranged siblings who reunite in their hometown following their father’s passing. Their plan to scatter his ashes at a remote riverside location takes a dark turn when their boat breaks down, transforming the trip into a horrifying ordeal. The cast includes Jane Levy and Jessica Rothe, alongside other genre veterans.
Originally developed by Independent Film Company and Shudder, the production is now transitioning to the major studio and production company for broader theatrical distribution. The arrangement builds on an existing relationship between Giuliano and current Blumhouse Atomic Monster leadership, who previously worked together at Shudder.
Giuliano has established himself within the horror community through award-winning short films and participation in the American Film Institute’s directing program. His momentum continues with another project, “Occupant,” already in development with additional production partners and Focus Features set to distribute.
