The Storm’n Sabres, a cooperative girls hockey program representing Sartell and Sauk Rapids-Rice, has selected Dan Marod as its new head coach, effective September 14, 2026. Marod takes over the position previously held by Bre Hess, who left the program to join the coaching staff at College of St. Benedict.
Marod comes to the role with coaching experience from multiple sports backgrounds. A former baseball player at Bethel College and in local townball leagues, he has coached football and baseball at Foley before transitioning into hockey. He joined the Storm’n Sabres as an assistant coach during the 2024-25 season under Hess’s direction, marking his entry into the sport. He also spent the past five years teaching at Foley.
The new coach faces the challenge of leading a young roster with limited returning players. Last season’s team finished with a 7-17-2 record, continuing a streak without a winning season since 2020. Despite these circumstances, Marod emphasized the importance of focusing on controllable factors like effort, attitude, and discipline rather than setting specific statistical goals.
Drawing from his experiences working with accomplished coaches across different sports, Marod has also expressed a strong commitment to recruiting female assistant coaches for the program, believing that women should lead young female athletes. He views his role as encouraging the team to develop their own leadership while maintaining high standards of coaching excellence.
