The Houston Astros have acquired outfielder Jorge Barrosa from the Arizona Diamondbacks via waiver claim. The 25-year-old joined the team for their matchup against the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday, shortly after Arizona designated him for assignment the previous week.
Despite modest offensive statistics accumulated over three seasons with the Diamondbacks, Astros manager Joe Espada emphasized Barrosa’s versatility as the primary reason for the acquisition. The switch-hitter has demonstrated the ability to play all three outfield positions and possesses speed and bat-control skills that could benefit Houston’s roster composition. Espada indicated the organization plans to utilize these attributes in both offensive and defensive strategies.
To make room for Barrosa on the roster, Houston optioned Jake Meyers to Triple-A Sugar Land following Sunday’s game against Arizona. Meyers, who was recalled when September rosters expanded, appeared in three games during the recent homestand exclusively in late-game situations.
Barrosa’s addition marks the 16th different outfield player to appear for Houston this season and the sixth acquired mid-season. The player expressed readiness to contribute to the team’s objectives, though uncertainty remains regarding his specific role going forward.
