John Oliver turned his satirical eye toward Sean Duffy, the Transportation Secretary and former reality television personality, during Sunday’s “Last Week Tonight.” Oliver criticized Duffy’s newly released YouTube series “The Great American Road Trip,” which launched all six episodes on Wednesday and purports to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary.
Oliver characterized the show as little more than a vanity project for the Duffy family, lacking substantive content about travel or the country despite its stated premise. He highlighted a particularly awkward moment in which Duffy expressed concerns about sending his daughter to Harvard, fearing the institution would corrupt her values. Oliver questioned the relevance of such family drama to a road trip program, while also pointing out the uncomfortable privilege reflected in the family’s conflict.
A major criticism centered on the show’s financing. Although Duffy maintained no taxpayer funds were used, the production was funded by companies including Boeing, Toyota, Shell, and United Airlines—all entities regulated by his Department of Transportation. Oliver highlighted the ethical implications of this arrangement, calling it a clear conflict of interest. When pressed about the controversy, Duffy’s response that people should “celebrate America” and that “it’s our birthday” drew sharp rebuke from Oliver.
Oliver also revisited Duffy’s past as a cast member on MTV’s “The Real World: Boston” in the late 1990s, critiquing his previous on-camera behavior and controversial statements made during his time on the show.
