Former LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels has sent a cease-and-desist letter to the university over the assignment of his former jersey number to another player. The dispute centers on sophomore cornerback DJ Pickett being allowed to wear number 5 this season, the same number Daniels wore during his Heisman Trophy-winning tenure.
According to Daniels’ representatives, the quarterback and his family believe they received assurances that the number would remain protected as part of his legacy at the institution. Former head coach Brian Kelly apparently gave Daniels reason to believe his number would be treated similarly to Joe Burrow’s retired number 9. However, new coach Lane Kiffin chose to honor a prior commitment made to Pickett by the previous coaching staff, allowing the cornerback to switch from number 3 to number 5.
While the surface-level complaint involves jersey number allocation, the underlying issue appears to be broken promises between university leadership and the standout quarterback. Kelly and LSU administrators seemingly overpromised protections they could not guarantee once coaching staff changed. Though Kiffin’s decision prioritizes continuity with current players, Daniels contends he was explicitly told his wishes regarding the number would be respected.
Despite the legitimate frustration over unkept commitments, many observers suggest Daniels should accept the situation and focus on his professional career with the Washington Commanders rather than contest another player wearing his former college number.
