Instagram has launched a new automatic editing feature called First Draft, designed to streamline the process of creating Reels. Available globally as of August 25, the tool condenses multiple video clips into a polished short-form video in under ten seconds, addressing a common pain point for content creators.
The feature operates within Instagram’s native Reels editor, eliminating the need for external editing applications. Users simply select their desired footage and tap the First Draft button, which then analyzes clips, identifies compelling moments, and trims content to an appropriate length. In a demonstration, the tool condensed nearly five minutes of skateboarding footage into a seventeen-second video. Creators retain full control, as they can preview, modify, add music to, or directly publish the automatically generated edit.
Instagram developed First Draft to address the tedious nature of manual video editing, which the company acknowledges can be particularly challenging for creators with accessibility needs. Rather than replacing human creativity, the tool handles repetitive editing tasks while allowing creators to make personalized adjustments before posting. This positions First Draft as a starting point rather than a final product.
The launch represents Instagram’s continued effort to simplify short-form video creation. The platform previously introduced customizable templates and Edits, a standalone editor featuring advanced capabilities like frame-accurate timelines and AI-powered effects. First Draft complements these existing tools by automating the initial editing phase of content production.
