Instagram has unveiled a redesigned wordmark, marking a significant refresh of the social media platform’s text-based logo. The company determined that its previous version had become outdated after approximately ten years of use. Instagram’s head Adam Mosseri announced the change across Instagram and Threads, characterizing the new design as “sharper and more modern” while still honoring the brand’s original aesthetic and maintaining a clean, simple appearance.
The updated wordmark incorporates stylistic elements inspired by cursive writing, with decorative flourishes added to certain letters including the “s,” “r,” and “g.” Some observers have noted that the distinctive letterforms, particularly the “r,” bear an unusual resemblance to other shapes, prompting lighthearted jokes among users. Despite these playful critiques, the recognizable Instagram brand name ensures that most people will immediately identify the logo, even with its artistic modifications.
The redesign has generated mixed reactions from the public, though the fresher appearance and font choices have garnered praise alongside the inevitable complaints that accompany any major branding change. This marks Instagram’s first significant logo update since 2016, when the platform transitioned from its iconic brown camera icon with rainbow stripe to the colorful pink gradient currently used as the app icon. Meta has not yet confirmed whether additional design changes to Instagram may follow.
