The Houthi movement has escalated its military campaign in Yemen, launching coordinated strikes involving missiles and drones against two major population centers. The overnight offensive targeted Marib, located inland, and al-Makha, a strategic port city along the Red Sea coast. According to officials and state media reports, the combined assault resulted in at least four fatalities and eight individuals sustaining injuries.
Details of the strikes reveal a pattern of civilian impact. In al-Makha, munitions struck both the city’s outskirts and a primary thoroughfare on Sunday. The Marib government authority reported that six ballistic missiles and four unmanned aircraft targeted residential zones in that city the previous evening, damaging homes and essential infrastructure while wounding residents. The port facility at al-Makha has suspended operations following multiple days of bombardment, according to the airport director.
The Yemeni government forces responded with their own military operations, conducting 181 separate actions against Houthi targets across multiple provinces during the same two-day period, claiming significant casualties within the militant group. The Houthis acknowledged losing four members but offered limited information regarding the incidents.
These recent attacks represent a dramatic rupture in Yemen’s fragile stability. The country had experienced relative calm since April 2022, following nearly a decade of conflict between government forces and the Houthis. However, escalation accelerated earlier this month when a Houthi strike on military installations killed approximately 30 government soldiers, marking the deadliest single incident in recent years and reigniting broader hostilities across several provinces.
