Hook, an artificial intelligence-driven music remixing platform, has secured a licensing agreement with Universal Music Group, marking a significant expansion of their existing partnership. The app enables music fans to create brief remixed clips from licensed tracks and share them across social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok. The new deal grants users access to catalogs from multiple UMG sublabels, including Republic Records, Capitol Records, and Virgin Music Group.
The platform distinguishes itself from other AI music companies by focusing on fan engagement rather than generative artificial intelligence. Users can apply effects and filters to existing songs to produce what the company calls “Hooks,” which are incorporated into their own video content. Importantly, original artists maintain ownership of their recordings and receive compensation when their music is used through the application.
Hook’s CEO emphasized the importance of artist control and security in the collaboration. The company has secured backing from prominent investors including Khosla Ventures, Point72, and Imaginary Ventures, as well as Edgar Bronfman Jr.’s Waverley Capital. The platform has already featured music from major artists including Justin Bieber, Kendrick Lamar, and The Weeknd, a roster the UMG agreement will substantially expand.
Universal Music Group’s chief digital officer highlighted the company’s commitment to addressing undermonetized social media spaces. The partnership reflects the industry’s broader shift toward licensing agreements with technology companies rather than litigation, positioning Hook as a model for artist-focused innovation in the evolving music landscape.
