The 44th Annual Hood to Coast Relay concluded Saturday morning at Seaside Beach, drawing thousands of participants from across the United States and internationally. The two-day event, known as the “Mother of all Relays,” welcomed approximately 20,000 runners and walkers who competed in both the Hood to Coast Relay and the Portland to Coast Walk Relay. Participants traveled from all 50 states and over 40 countries to take part in the celebrated competition.
Teams consist of 12 members who rotate completing their respective distances. Hood to Coast runners cover 199 miles from Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood to Seaside Beach, while Portland to Coast walkers traverse 128 miles. Rather than emphasizing competition, organizers designed these events as celebrations of community and friendship. The races support the Providence Cancer Institute, with all fundraising proceeds supporting cancer research, treatment and support services throughout Oregon. Since 2014, participants and volunteers have generated over $9.4 million for this cause.
Saturday’s finish brought record-breaking performances. Team Lost Boys claimed the Men’s Open title with a time of 17 hours and 27 minutes, surpassing their own previous course record by more than one minute. In the Women’s Open Division, Team VO2 Min finished first in 21 hours and 20 seconds, narrowly edging second-place finishers by mere seconds. Team Loud and Proud won the Portland to Coast Walking Relay. Spectators lined Seaside Beach to celebrate the arriving athletes, many dressed in creative costumes, as the event concluded with festivities throughout the community.
