Korean distribution company Finecut has secured multiple international deals for several festival films, with director Hong Sangsoo’s award-winning drama leading the charge. “Nowhere to Lay My Eyes,” which represents Hong’s 35th directorial effort, triumphed at the Locarno Film Festival, earning recognition for best direction, best performance, and the Ecumenical Jury Prize. The intimate narrative centers on a woman who reunites with her mother after a decade, accompanying her brother for a two-day family visit. Finecut has placed the film across numerous territories including North America, the United Kingdom, Spain, China, Austria, and Taiwan.
Beyond Hong’s latest work, Finecut’s slate expansion includes “Long Long Night,” a 3D animated feature making its directorial debut in the animation space. The film has already secured Japanese distribution and will premiere at the Toronto Film Festival before continuing its festival circuit through Busan and Sitges. The animated project adapts a bestselling Korean novel rooted in true events that achieved extraordinary commercial success domestically.
Completing the bundle of recent deals is “Dora,” the third feature from director July Jung, who recently became the first Korean female filmmaker to achieve three consecutive Cannes selections. The drama pairs emerging actress Kim Doyeon with Japanese performer Ando Sakura and has found distributors in Japan and Taiwan ahead of its Busan Film Festival gala presentation.
