Helen Mirren takes on the role of acclaimed mystery writer Patricia Highsmith in the upcoming thriller A Talent for Murder. The film, directed by Anton Corbijn and written by Joanna Murray-Smith, features actor Alden Ehrenreich as Edward Ridgeway, a publisher’s representative dispatched to Switzerland with a specific mission.
Ridgeway’s task involves persuading Highsmith to write another installment in her celebrated Ripley series. However, complications arise when a previous emissary from the publishing house vanishes without explanation, and Highsmith’s residence contains numerous weapons. Before agreeing to work on the project, Highsmith challenges Ridgeway to demonstrate his ability to think like a criminal within a single evening.
To prove his capability, Ridgeway engages with Highsmith in a dangerous intellectual exercise inspired by her crime fiction methodology. The pair identify their hypothetical target: Clementine Harriet Balfour, portrayed by House of the Dragon star Olivia Cooke, a woman with significant inheritance prospects. As their game progresses, the line between literary exploration and genuine criminal intent grows increasingly blurred.
A Talent for Murder arrives in theaters on October 23rd.
