Bluesky, a prominent competitor to Elon Musk’s X platform, has introduced a new feature that gives users greater control over their content visibility. The social media platform announced Thursday that members can now prevent their posts from appearing in algorithmic recommendation feeds to non-followers.
The opt-out feature allows users to restrict their content from the platform’s Discover feed while keeping their posts publicly accessible. Accounts remain visible to anyone, and the feature does not convert profiles to private status. Instead, the algorithm simply avoids recommending a user’s posts to individuals who do not already follow them. Though content could theoretically still circulate through manual sharing, enabling this setting significantly reduces the likelihood of posts becoming widely distributed.
Users can activate the feature through the Privacy and Security settings by toggling on “Ask apps to hide my posts from algorithmic recommendations.” The change takes approximately one hour to implement across the platform. The setting operates at the account level, enabling third-party applications built on Bluesky’s AT Proto protocol to support the functionality if developers choose to implement it.
This development reflects Bluesky’s broader strategy of differentiating itself through customization options. The platform recently expanded video upload capabilities to allow clips up to ten minutes long and previously introduced enhanced custom feed functionality, positioning itself as a user-controlled alternative in the social media landscape.
