Neil Young has unveiled a fresh recording of “Casting Me Away From You,” a ballad he composed in 1965 while still a teenager. The track will be featured on his forthcoming album Second Song, which he created alongside the Chrome Hearts in Malibu, California.
Young originally laid down the song in the attic of a high school friend’s home in Toronto, just months before relocating to Los Angeles. Over the decades, elements of the composition influenced other works, including the 1968 instrumental “The Emperor of Wyoming” and his 1976 hit “Long May You Run.” When Young found himself without sufficient new material during recent recording sessions, he decided to revisit and re-record this early composition.
The newly recorded version was shared on the Neil Young Archives alongside vintage footage of Young driving across his California ranch property. The full Second Song album, which also features a re-recorded version of the 1964 deep cut “I’ll Love You Forever,” is scheduled for release on September 19. Young explained that the inclusion of these older songs alongside fresh material creates a meaningful contrast that unifies the project.
