Chris Gunter, the former Wales international defender, has been appointed as the country’s Under-18 coach beginning in the 2026-27 season. The 37-year-old will take on this new role while simultaneously maintaining his position as assistant manager at League One club Oxford United, a post he assumed last month under manager Aaron Ramsey.
Gunter brings significant experience to the youth setup, having recently led Wales’ Under-19 team during the Uefa Men’s Under-19 Championship this summer. His extensive international career saw him earn 109 caps for his country, establishing him as a respected figure in Welsh football.
The Football Association of Wales has confirmed that Gunter’s dual appointment is feasible, allowing him to balance both commitments. Meanwhile, Jon Grey, who previously worked as an assistant with the Wales women’s team and currently holds a position at Swansea City, will step in to manage the men’s Under-19 side during the current season. Additional coaching appointments include Adrian Harvie for the Under-17s, Drew Sherman and Jonathan Jones for the Under-16s, alongside continued leadership from the women’s programme.
