Romanian filmmaker Alina Șerban is making history this week as her feature directorial debut, “I Matter,” premieres at the Venice Film Festival. The film marks a significant milestone as the first feature from a female Roma director to screen at a major international festival, showcasing Șerban’s journey from poverty to prominence in the entertainment industry.
Șerban’s path to this moment has been extraordinary. Raised in poverty in Bucharest and placed in a state-run orphanage as a child, she became the first member of her family to complete high school. She went on to study at prestigious institutions including the Academy of Theatrical Arts and Cinematography in Bucharest, NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. Upon returning to Romania, she established herself as a celebrated stage performer and playwright, creating pioneering works that centered Roma perspectives.
“I Matter” draws inspiration from Șerban’s own experiences, following a young Roma woman training as an actress while confronting homelessness and her identity. Based on a 2021 short film, the feature stars newcomer Denisa Farcași and was developed as a collaborative process that gave performers space to connect with the material personally. The production will bring nearly two dozen cast members to Venice, including 16 child actors, with Roma band Mahala Rai Banda performing at the premiere.
Reflecting on the moment, Șerban expressed both nervousness and gratitude, calling it a historic occasion for herself and the Roma community alike. She emphasized her commitment to presenting dignified, nuanced portrayals of Roma people that celebrate their humanity beyond victimhood or stereotypes.
