The 54th Gramado Film Festival concluded in Brazil this week with multiple accolades going to “Our Secret,” a debut feature from playwright and actress Grace Passô. The film earned the festival’s highest honor for feature filmmaking, along with recognition in cinematography and art direction categories. Passô both directed and wrote the film, which explores the emotional landscape of a Black family navigating loss and hidden truths within their household.
The narrative centers on family members struggling to process grief while the youngest son harbors a secret with potential to unearth deeper family wounds. Cinematographer Wilssa Esser and production designer Lucas Osório contributed significantly to the film’s visual language, earning their own Kikito awards alongside the top prize. The recognition marks a significant achievement for Passô, transitioning from her established career in theater and acting to feature film direction.
The festival celebrated numerous other films across its categories at the August 22 closing ceremony. Allan Deberton’s “Gugu’s World” won the audience award and best director honors, while Carlos Segundo’s “Milk Powder” received the critics’ jury award. Passô’s film is scheduled for theatrical release in Brazil on August 27 through distributor Vitrine Filmes, following its festival premiere success.
