The 39th Tokyo International Film Festival has announced its opening, centerpiece, and closing films for its October 26 to November 4 run. Director Yamazaki Takashi’s “Godzilla Minus Zero” will serve as the festival’s centerpiece attraction. The kaiju film represents a continuation of “Godzilla Minus One,” which previously earned an Academy Award for visual effects. Yamazaki directed, wrote, and handled visual effects for the sequel, which stars Kamiki Ryunosuke and Hamabe Minami and marks the first Japanese feature filmed for Imax screens.
“Sukiyaki,” a music drama helmed by Zeze Takahisa, will launch the festival. The film chronicles the creation of the iconic 1963 song that achieved three consecutive weeks at number one on the U.S. Billboard chart, featuring performances by Okada Junichi, Matsuzaka Tori, and Nakano Taiga as the composer, lyricist, and singer behind the hit track.
Yeon Sang-ho’s zombie thriller “Colony” will close the festival. The Korean production follows a professor navigating a Seoul high-rise during a bioterror attack, featuring an ensemble cast including Gianna Jun and Ji Chang-wook. The film previously screened at Cannes and achieved box office success across Asia.
