Calvin Demba, known for his starring role in the Netflix series “Supacell,” is directing his second short film, bringing together a notable ensemble cast. The project, titled “The Animals,” features George MacKay, Louisa Harland, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Eric Kofi Abrefa. Demba both wrote and directed the piece, which was produced by Tuli Litvak.
The narrative follows Miles, portrayed by MacKay, as he navigates feelings of inadequacy within his romantic relationship with Remona, played by Harland. A violent home invasion involving another man’s heroic intervention becomes a catalyst for Miles to reassess his identity, leading him to grapple with harmful masculine ideals that have shaped his behavior. Demba describes the work as a darkly comedic exploration of gender performance in modern relationships, examining how people unconsciously adopt prescribed gender roles. The director emphasizes that despite its satirical tone, the film’s depiction of violence remains grounded and serious rather than humorous.
The production was shot on 16mm film earlier this year, with cinematography by Ebba Hult and color grading by Jodie Davison. The editing was handled by Mdhamiri Á Nkemi. Executive producers include BAFTA winners Mouktar Mohammed and Sheila Nortley, alongside Demba and Harland. “The Animals” will premiere at a major festival qualifying for BAFTA and Academy Award consideration, with announcements forthcoming. Additionally, Demba is developing the short into a feature-length film with support from the BFI.
