Geno Smith returned to the practice field Monday morning following his absence from the Jets’ preseason opener. The quarterback had missed the team’s game against Tampa Bay due to an ankle injury, though the organization expressed confidence he would not face a prolonged recovery period.
Smith participated in the walkthrough session during Monday’s practice and was observed wearing a protective sleeve on his lower left leg. His appearance on the field signals positive progress in his recovery from the ankle issue that sidelined him for the opening preseason contest.
In Smith’s absence, fourth-round draft pick Cade Klubnik took over starting duties against the Buccaneers and made a compelling case for the backup quarterback position. Klubnik orchestrated two scoring drives that resulted in ten combined points, bolstering his candidacy for the regular-season roster.
The Jets will face the Pittsburgh Steelers in their second preseason matchup this Friday. Head coach Aaron Glenn has not yet disclosed his lineup decisions for the upcoming game, leaving questions about which quarterbacks will see action against the Steelers.
