A new documentary honoring late Rush drummer and lyricist Neil Peart will premiere on Canada’s CBC network in late September. Titled “Neil Peart: No One’s Disciple,” the film will chronicle Peart’s life and legacy while featuring interviews with his former bandmates Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson alongside reflections from influential drummers about his impact on the music world.
For the documentary, Lee and Lifeson recorded special rehearsal performances of iconic Rush compositions alongside three celebrated guest drummers. Stewart Copeland of The Police, Chad Smith from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Tool’s Danny Carey each took turns behind the kit for these tribute sessions. While Lee and Lifeson had previously performed with Smith and Carey at a 2022 tribute concert, their collaboration with Copeland marks the first time the three musicians played together, particularly significant given Copeland’s personal friendship with Peart.
Peart, widely recognized as one of rock music’s greatest drummers, passed away from cancer in 2020. Known for his humility despite his legendary status, Peart often deflected praise and focused on continuous improvement rather than celebrating past achievements. Currently, Lee and Lifeson are touring with drummer Anika Nilles and incorporating multiple tributes to Peart into each performance.
