OpenAI is developing a new artificial intelligence device in collaboration with renowned designer Jony Ive, according to recent reporting. The gadget is described as a compact, doughnut-shaped smart speaker roughly the size of a hockey puck that operates without a display screen. The battery-powered device is expected to arrive in 2027 with a price tag exceeding $300.
The speaker will feature distinctive moving components that activate automatically to indicate when the device is actively responding or engaging with users. Additional capabilities include integrated lighting, a camera system, and various sensors to enhance its functionality. The compact form factor is intended to allow users to easily transport the device throughout their home using a single hand, similar to earlier portable speaker designs.
OpenAI plans for the device to utilize advanced voice-based interaction comparable to ChatGPT’s smartphone voice mode, but with improved conversational abilities for more natural user engagement. The company has indicated this speaker may be the first in a larger collection of devices currently in development. Despite ongoing legal disputes between OpenAI and Apple, the new gadget is reported to have a distinctly different aesthetic and feel from Apple products.
