An initiative to develop filmmaking infrastructure in Gaza was unveiled during the Venice Film Festival on Monday, bringing together a coalition of established Palestinian, Arab, and international creative professionals. The Gaza Cinema Academy represents an effort to create educational opportunities and production resources for emerging filmmakers in the region while fostering connections with the global film industry.
The project has secured backing from prominent industry figures, including Venice Silver Lion winner Kaouther Ben Hania, directors Annemarie Jacir and Mai Masri, actors including Hiam Abbas and Ramy Youssef, and international production specialists. The academy plans to concentrate its efforts on training young talent, with particular emphasis on supporting women in film, while simultaneously developing original Palestinian cinema and strengthening ties between local filmmakers and international festivals and distribution networks.
According to organizers, the academy intends to function as a sustainable cultural institution dedicated to film education, production support, and talent development. The initiative seeks partnerships with universities, film festivals, funding organizations, and production companies to create opportunities for Gaza-based filmmakers to produce work and gain exposure to worldwide audiences. The launch coincides with the presence of two Palestinian films in this year’s Venice program: “Citizen Osama” and “Conversation With the Sea.”
