American tennis player Frances Tiafoe has withdrawn from the mixed doubles competition at the U.S. Open due to injury, tournament officials confirmed Monday. Tiafoe was set to compete alongside Canadian partner Leylah Fernandez in a first-round matchup scheduled for Tuesday against the top-seeded duo of Aryna Sabalenka and Novak Djokovic.
Following Tiafoe’s withdrawal, Sabalenka and Djokovic will face a different opponent in their opening round. The newly assigned pairing features Katerina Siniakova and Henry Patten, the world’s top-ranked doubles team, who advanced to the main draw by winning two qualifying matches.
Tiafoe has been dealing with a wrist issue for several weeks. He retired from his third-round match at the Canadian Open in Montreal on August 6 due to a right hand injury, which was later diagnosed as a cyst requiring surgery. Despite medical advice against competition, Tiafoe chose to play in Cincinnati, where he reached the finals before losing to Arthur Fils on Sunday.
The American remains entered in the U.S. Open singles draw, where he has reached the semifinals in both 2022 and 2024. The mixed doubles competition takes place in the week leading up to the main singles event, which will showcase notable pairings including Serena Williams with Carlos Alcaraz.
