Brett Rypien has joined the Houston Texans on Saturday, marking his ninth team affiliation in just eight seasons. The quarterback, who went undrafted in 2019, was brought in to address a sudden gap in the Texans’ roster following an injury to sixth-round draft pick Graham Mertz, who sustained an ACL tear during a preseason matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Rypien had remained without a team since March before recently completing a brief stint with the Minnesota Vikings. During his second year with the franchise, he served in a backup capacity behind several quarterbacks before joining Houston. His extensive experience bouncing between NFL rosters throughout his career makes him a reliable depth option for emergency situations.
With the Texans, Rypien will occupy the third quarterback position behind starter C.J. Stroud and Davis Mills. Throughout his professional career, Rypien has appeared in eleven games, with four starts under his belt. His statistical record includes 950 passing yards, four touchdowns, and nine interceptions while maintaining a 58.3% completion percentage.
