Simon Rosselli, a recent graduate from Mead High School, will compete this weekend at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene as he pursues his first international title. The incoming University of Oregon freshman earned his spot by winning the USATF U20 championship in June, where he threw the international discus—1.75 kilograms—for only the first time in competition.
Rosselli’s coach, TJ Crater from IronWood, will attend the meet for the first time to watch his athlete compete. The qualifying round takes place Saturday with three throws per competitor, with the top 12 advancing to Sunday’s finals. The championship format allows additional throws for medal contention. Despite competing against more experienced international athletes, Rosselli and Crater are targeting a winning performance, with training sessions suggesting he could achieve distances around 67 meters.
The competition features formidable opponents, including Jamaica’s Joseph Richard Salmon, who holds the U20 world record at 67.55 meters. Remarkably, Rosselli is seeded fifth despite his limited international competition experience. Crater praised his athlete’s focus and consistent training over the past six weeks, noting that executing at peak performance could position him competitively against the field.
Following the U20 Championships, Rosselli will transition to collegiate competition when the University of Oregon’s fall semester begins in late September. He will then adjust to throwing the college-standard discus, which weighs 2 kilograms.
