Searchlight Pictures has announced the official title and cast for the long-awaited sequel to the beloved 2005 holiday film. “The Families Stone” will reunite viewers with many original cast members, bringing back Rachel McAdams, Sarah Jessica Parker, Claire Danes, and Dermot Mulroney among others. Tom Bezucha, who wrote and directed the original, is returning to helm the follow-up project.
Set two decades after the events of the first film, the sequel follows the Stone family as they gather for Christmas and encounter an unexpected development: their father introduces a new romantic partner to the household. The premise sets the stage for the familiar holiday dynamics and family complications that made the original resonate with audiences.
The project was initially revealed in November 2025, shortly after the passing of Diane Keaton, who portrayed the Stone family matriarch in the original film. Bezucha reflected on the emotional weight of developing the sequel while processing the loss of the longtime cast member, describing it as an especially difficult period during production.
The original “Family Stone” proved a commercial success upon its 2005 release, earning $92 million worldwide despite its modest $18 million budget. The film has maintained a strong presence in holiday entertainment over the past two decades.
