This year’s Emmy Awards music categories showcase significant diversity among nominees, with one-third of the 54 total contenders making their first appearance in the competition. Across seven music categories, fresh talent accounts for 18 nominees, while only 12 represent previous Emmy-winning composers. Several established composers received multiple nominations this year. This year’s nominee pool reflects mixed progress regarding representation. Female nominees declined to eight, or 15 percent, down from nine the previous year. However, representation among people of color increased to 15 nominees, comprising 28 percent of the total. The song category features a historic milestone with “Mis Figuritas” from “Hacks,” becoming the first Spanish-language song ever nominated in this category.
Voting among the Academy’s approximately 750 music branch members runs through August 26, with winners announced September 5 and 6. Notably, only five of the 31 nominated programs come from traditional broadcast networks, concentrated entirely in the music direction category.
