Chinese technology company Xpeng has announced that its humanoid robot, IRON, is now entering mass production through existing manufacturing facilities. The company claims this marks the first instance of such a machine independently walking off a production line. Standing approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighing 143 pounds, IRON comes in various body shapes and genders, featuring sophisticated mechanical design with 82 degrees of freedom throughout its structure.
Xpeng envisions IRON becoming a domestic assistant capable of handling household tasks such as cleaning and laundry folding. The company projects that humanoid robots will proliferate at a scale comparable to smartphones’ adoption in the mid-2000s. IRON boasts advanced autonomous capabilities, including obstacle avoidance, strategic planning, environmental navigation, and a self-charging feature that enables it to locate and connect to designated charging stations independently.
The robot integrates three frameworks combining vision-language action systems, vision-language models, and reasoning capabilities powered by three Turing AI chips. This processing power allows IRON to run advanced language models locally without internet connectivity. While Xpeng will initially deploy units in showrooms and company facilities, commercial shipments targeting customer service and tour guide roles are planned for 2027, beginning in China before expanding internationally.
IRON enters a growing market where competitors including Figure AI’s Figure 03 and Chinese manufacturer AGIBOT have already begun mass production. However, Xpeng representatives highlight IRON’s advantages over competing systems, including its integration with the company’s existing artificial intelligence infrastructure developed for electric vehicles and experimental aircraft.
