A senior military intelligence official in eastern Libya has been killed in an explosive device attack. Major-General Fawzi al-Mansouri, who headed military intelligence operations for the Libyan National Army, died Monday evening when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle in Benghazi’s Hawari district as he was leaving his home.
The eastern Libyan government’s prime minister, Osama Saad Hammad, swiftly denounced the attack as a terrorist act. In a statement released Tuesday, he vowed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and emphasized the government’s commitment to eliminating armed opposition to state authority, declaring that those involved in planning, executing, or financing assassination campaigns would face consequences.
Al-Mansouri had served as director of military intelligence since his appointment in 2024. His death underscores persistent security vulnerabilities within Libya despite a ceasefire agreement reached in 2020 that reduced large-scale combat operations. The country has remained divided since 2014 between rival administrations, with the eastern-based Libyan National Army controlling significant portions of the east and south, while the internationally recognized Government of National Unity maintains control in the western region and capital city of Tripoli.
