Dave Bautista has officially been cast as Kratos in Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming “God of War” television adaptation. The actor, known for his roles in “Dune” and “Guardians of the Galaxy,” steps into the iconic video game character following the departure of original cast member Ryan Hurst, who sustained a serious bicep injury during filming that would have pushed production into 2027.
The streamer and co-producer Sony Pictures Television announced they would be recasting the role after Hurst’s injury forced him to exit the project. Bautista’s casting represents an ideal fit for the physically demanding character, as the former wrestler maintains the muscular physique required for Kratos without needing extensive preparation time. Production is expected to resume within the coming weeks, though all scenes featuring Hurst will need to be refilmed.
The series has received a two-season order and will be shot back-to-back. The story follows Kratos and his young son Atreus as they journey through the Norse mythology-inspired narrative established in recent video game installments. The ensemble cast includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, and Ed Skrein as Baldur, with Ronald D. Moore serving as showrunner and executive producer.
