Dale Morris, a prominent figure in Nashville’s music management industry, passed away Friday at the age of 89. Morris spent decades shaping the careers of some of country music’s biggest names, leaving an indelible mark on the genre through his strategic guidance and industry expertise.
Morris’s most significant achievements included his pivotal role in developing Alabama into one of country music’s most successful acts. Beginning in 1989, he guided the band to 33 number-one hits throughout the 1980s and 1990s, while also establishing their reputation for large-scale touring productions that rivaled rock concerts. The group earned multiple Entertainer of the Year awards from major country music associations during this period. Morris later replicated this success with Kenny Chesney, transforming him into a stadium-filling superstar with 32 number-one Billboard country songs and multiple major industry awards.
Beyond his work with these superstars, Morris Higham Management represented numerous other successful artists including Martina McBride, Old Dominion, and Gretchen Wilson. Morris’s career began as a songwriter before transitioning to management, and he maintained a philosophy of staying selective with clients rather than pursuing unlimited growth. His protégé Clint Higham, who eventually became his partner, reflected that Morris “lived a big, bold, beautiful, blessed life” and was instrumental in inspiring others to exceed their own expectations.
Morris is survived by his wife of 68 years, Earline, along with extended family members. A celebration of life is planned for fall.
