The Washington Commanders moved quickly to address their offensive line following the release of Foster Sarell on Tuesday. General manager Adam Peters signed veteran tackle D.J. Humphries to a one-year contract, filling the roster spot ahead of Wednesday’s joint practice with the Baltimore Ravens.
Humphries, 32, was drafted in the first round by the Arizona Cardinals in 2015. After a redshirt rookie year, he took over at left tackle in 2016 and held that position full-time starting in 2017. During his seven seasons with Arizona, Humphries earned Pro Bowl honors in 2021 before being released in 2024. He subsequently spent time with the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Rams, appearing in limited action for both teams.
With Humphries now on the roster, the Commanders project Brandon Coleman and Josh Conerly Jr. as starting tackles, with Trent Scott, Andrew Wylie, and Humphries serving as backups. Despite this addition, concerns persist regarding the team’s interior offensive line, particularly at left guard and center positions.
The signing comes as all NFL teams prepare for the September roster deadline, when rosters must be reduced to 53 players. It remains unclear whether Peters will pursue additional moves to bolster the offensive line before the cutoff date.
