The Indianapolis Colts’ backup quarterback situation raised significant concerns following Saturday’s preseason matchup against the Atlanta Falcons, which ended in a lopsided 34-6 defeat. Both Anthony Richardson and Riley Leonard, who have been competing throughout training camp for the backup role behind Daniel Jones, delivered underwhelming performances that earned them spots on industry analysts’ list of Week 2 preseason disappointments.
Richardson took the field in the second half and managed only 3 completions on 9 attempts for 24 yards while being sacked twice. Leonard, who started the contest, fared slightly better with 7 completions on 14 attempts for 62 yards. Critics acknowledged that Richardson faced challenges from an inconsistent offensive line and limited receiving options, though these circumstances could not fully explain the lackluster showing.
The performances represented a regression for both quarterbacks, particularly Richardson, who had impressed in the preseason opener against New England with 11 of 14 completions for 145 yards, 53 rushing yards, and a touchdown. Leonard had also struggled in his debut, going 10 of 21 for 89 yards with an interception. With only one preseason game remaining, analysts suggested the Colts needed stronger quarterback play to solidify depth at the position heading into the regular season.
