The UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon has documented a sharp escalation in military activity affecting civilians in the country’s southern regions. According to UNIFIL, the UN Interim Force in Lebanon, approximately 137 projectiles were launched daily throughout the first half of August, with particularly heavy volleys recorded over the weekend when 208 and 185 projectiles were fired on consecutive days.
The intensified military operations are occurring despite a ceasefire agreement renewed in June between Lebanon and Israel, which was negotiated by the United States. However, the agreement has remained contentious, as Hezbollah has refused to accept its terms without a complete Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory. Israel currently maintains a presence in several southern areas but has not committed to full withdrawal under the current framework.
Civilian populations are bearing the consequences of the escalation, with families displaced and forced to alter daily activities due to widespread insecurity. UNIFIL has continued its peacekeeping operations through patrols, humanitarian aid coordination, and explosive device mitigation efforts. Lebanon’s government has called for extending UNIFIL’s mandate beyond its scheduled December expiration, viewing the international presence as essential for regional stability and protection of its citizens.
