A24’s upcoming film “Primetime,” which features Robert Pattinson portraying investigative journalist Chris Hansen, will not be screened for its subject. The 66-year-old veteran broadcaster visited A24’s offices Thursday morning for a private preview of director Lance Oppenheim’s drama ahead of its Venice Film Festival debut, but departed without viewing the picture.
Hansen appeared on Fox News to explain his decision to walk away from the screening. He stated that A24 required him to sign a comprehensive legal agreement that would have surrendered his rights to his name, image, and brand, along with potential legal claims arising from the film. Hansen characterized the document as extraordinarily restrictive and unlike anything encountered during his four-decade journalism career. After his legal team reviewed the paperwork and advised against signing, he chose not to proceed with the screening.
An A24 representative indicated the agreement was a standard non-disclosure agreement designed to prevent spoilers and protect intellectual property for unreleased films. However, Hansen noted that other individuals have viewed the film without signing such an agreement. The filmmaker has previously described “Primetime” as fictionalized and inspired by true events rather than a biographical account. “Primetime” is scheduled for theatrical release September 25 following its world premiere at Venice.
