Choctaw’s football season got off to a disappointing start Thursday night in Panama City, falling to Mosley 15-13 in a non-district matchup. Despite playing against a three-time defending regional champion, the Big Green struggled to maintain momentum throughout the contest, particularly faltering in the second half where they failed to score any points.
The team’s offensive output came early, with a one-yard rushing touchdown from Carter Marracco in the first quarter and a 37-yard passing touchdown connecting Baker Giles and Rives Brown. However, a two-point conversion attempt following the latter score fell short, leaving Choctaw unable to tie the game. Brown was subsequently ejected after an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for spiking the ball in the end zone.
Choctaw’s performance was marred by numerous self-inflicted mistakes, including roughly 23 penalties, two turnovers in prime scoring opportunities, and multiple player injuries throughout the evening. Despite these obstacles, the team had a final opportunity with 1:26 remaining, but a fourth-down incompletion sealed the defeat.
The loss came against a highly-ranked Mosley squad, though Choctaw enters next week’s contest against Auburn at home still positioned as the fifth-ranked team in the 4A poll. The Big Green will look to bounce back when they host Auburn on August 28.
