The decisive moment came with under two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter when senior kicker Tim Reinhard connected on a 44-yard field goal to secure the win at Ken Strong Stadium.
The Rams’ comeback was remarkable considering they trailed 13-0 at halftime and accumulated fewer than 20 yards of offense in the opening half. West Haven’s dominance early was built on two touchdown runs by Haven N’sumbu, who rushed for 92 yards on the evening. However, Cheshire’s second-half performance proved transformative, capitalizing on two West Haven miscues that resulted in safeties and shifted momentum decisively.
Cheshire’s offensive surge began in the third quarter following the first safety. Michael Chopak scored on a 15-yard touchdown run, and two plays later, another West Haven snap sailed out of the end zone, drawing the Rams within one point. The winning drive featured a crucial 20-yard completion by Shane Jerome before Reinhard’s game-winning kick with 1:55 remaining ended West Haven’s hopes for victory.
Reinhard, who had impressed during warm-ups with long-distance kicks, credited his team’s defensive performance and his holder for the successful final moments. Cheshire improved to 1-0 while West Haven fell to 0-1 in conference play.
