Canadian right-back Alistair Johnston suffered a muscle injury during Celtic’s 5-1 victory over Kilmarnock, which is expected to sideline him for several weeks. The manager suggested Engels may have been motivated to complete his transfer promptly to avoid a similar fate affecting his career prospects.
Celtic have bolstered their squad this week by signing Egyptian winger Haissem Hassan and German midfielder Mika Baur. O’Neill also indicated interest in securing Chelsea left-back Landon Emenalo on loan as cover for Kieran Tierney, describing the 18-year-old as a talented prospect.
