A director’s cut version of the 2008 film “The X-Files: I Want to Believe” is set to arrive on streaming platforms later this month with a notably darker tone than audiences experienced originally. The reimagined film, now carrying the retitle “The X-Files: I Want to Believe – Vrach Frankenshteyn” and rated R, will premiere on Disney+ and Hulu on August 14th.
Director Chris Carter attributed the original film’s mixed critical reception to compromises made to secure a PG-13 rating, which he believed compromised the story’s horror elements. The newly released trailer for the director’s cut demonstrates a markedly scarier aesthetic, featuring disturbing imagery including faces frozen beneath ice and trapped victims pleading for escape, accompanied by unsettling orchestral music that intensifies the psychological tension.
The revised version follows agents Mulder and Scully as they investigate a series of kidnappings with assistance from a defrocked priest claiming psychic abilities. According to Hulu’s statement, this R-rated iteration represents Carter’s original artistic vision—a darker thriller centered on a real-life Dr. Frankenstein narrative that viewers have never previously encountered.
Both the original 2008 film and the newly restored director’s cut will be available simultaneously on the streaming platforms, allowing audiences to directly compare the two versions.
