Billy Joel has undergone brain surgery to treat normal pressure hydrocephalus, a condition he was diagnosed with in 2025. The legendary musician discussed the procedure during an appearance on SiriusXM’s Billy Joel channel, explaining that he decided to have a shunt implanted in his brain after consulting with his neurologist about the progressive nature of the disorder.
The 77-year-old singer initially experienced balance problems and described feeling as though he were “rocking on a boat.” After researching the surgical option, Joel determined that the potential benefits outweighed his initial hesitation about the invasive procedure. His neurologist had recommended the shunt because the condition could worsen over time if left untreated.
Following the surgery, Joel reported significant improvements in his quality of life. He noted that his memory, balance, and overall ability to function have all improved since the shunt was implanted. The performer also revealed that his medical team had advised him to limit stress and avoid excessive physical exertion, which led to the cancellation of several concerts. Though he made a brief return to performing in January, he has largely adhered to his doctors’ recommendations.
During his radio appearance, Joel reassured fans about his health status. “I’m ok. I want people to know, don’t worry about me. I’m still here,” he told listeners, emphasizing that he remains in good spirits despite the medical challenges he has faced.
