Beechwood High School’s volleyball program made headlines by securing consecutive Ninth Region All “A” championships. The Tigers defeated St. Henry in the 2026 regional final with a three-set victory, claiming their second consecutive regional title and building on last year’s achievement of winning both the regional and state championships without dropping a single set.
The championship match took place on August 27 at Beechwood’s home facility, where the Tigers faced off against the sixth-ranked Crusaders in a competitive contest. Despite St. Henry’s strong performance, Beechwood demonstrated resilience and strategic adjustments throughout the match. Head coach Matt Long noted the team’s determination, stating that while last year’s path may have been different, earning this year’s victory against a formidable opponent proved meaningful for his squad.
Multiple factors contributed to Beechwood’s success in the regional final. Young players including freshman Kennedy Sturgeon and eighth-grader Payce Adams excelled at the service line, combining with another freshman to generate 11 aces collectively. Senior Isabel O’Brien, who earned tournament MVP honors, led the team in kills and aces, while middle hitters Macy Armstrong and Rachel Lewandowski combined for 19 kills and three blocks. Setter Skylr Estep proved instrumental in orchestrating Beechwood’s offensive strategy.
Looking ahead, Beechwood will compete in the All “A” state tournament on September 18-19 in Owensboro. As the defending state champion and current regional titleholder, the Tigers enter with strong momentum, as the Ninth Region champion has finished as either the state champion or runner-up in all but two years since the tournament’s inception in 2009.
