Bayern Munich has expressed confidence that midfielder Jamal Musiala’s career will not be derailed following his recent diagnosis of absence seizures. Club sources indicated to dpa on Wednesday that evidence suggests the 23-year-old German international can continue performing at the elite level of professional football.
Musiala experienced two on-field collapses within four days during Bayern’s pre-season preparations. The first incident occurred during a friendly against RB Leipzig on Saturday, followed by another during Tuesday’s match at Heidenheim. Following the second collapse, Musiala posted on social media explaining he had been diagnosed with treatable absence seizures caused by a neurological dysfunction, maintaining optimism about his condition.
The club revealed that Musiala’s participation in both matches had proceeded without complications and was extensively reviewed with medical professionals beforehand. Absence seizures involve brief lapses in consciousness and are typically manageable, though some medical experts classify them as a form of epilepsy. Bayern’s medical team and support network are assisting the player as he manages his condition.
Musiala’s latest health challenge comes as he continues recovery from a broken leg sustained in July. The midfielder struggled to regain his best form following the injury and underwent a procedure earlier this year to address lingering ankle issues. Bayern’s competitive season begins Saturday with the German Super Cup against Borussia Dortmund, with their Bundesliga title defense commencing on August 28 against Stuttgart.
