International distributor Balanga has announced significant international acquisitions for its historical documentary “Beasts of the Colosseum,” marking the project’s entry into major European and Canadian markets. The film, produced by AH! Production and Adline for French broadcaster Novo 19 with Italian partner Mediaset, has been acquired by Germany’s ZDF/Terra X, Sweden’s SVT, and Radio-Canada, establishing strong early traction ahead of its presentation at the Unifrance Rendez-Vous event.
The documentary explores the Venationes, the elaborate spectacles of ancient Rome that showcased exotic animals imported from across the empire to fight in the Colosseum. Rather than focusing on human combatants, the film examines the complex logistics behind capturing and transporting thousands of wild beasts across vast distances, revealing an entertainment system of remarkable scale and coordination.
A distinctive feature of “Beasts of the Colosseum” is its use of artificial intelligence to create historical reenactments. Producer Enora Contant emphasized that every AI-generated sequence undergoes rigorous historical verification by experts, with filmmakers working carefully to overcome technical limitations and ensure visual authenticity. Balanga President Christophe Bochnacki suggested this approach represents a new generation of historical documentaries, enabling immersive visual experiences previously constrained by production economics.
The documentary previously premiered out of competition at the Cannes AI Film Festival and will be presented to international buyers during the Unifrance Rendez-Vous in Le Havre on September 8.
